It's the question all people younger than 18 learn to loathe and the question all women older than 30 learn to love.

Kentucky residents need proof of identity in order to make certain purchases, enter particular facilities, and take part in some activities. It's probably safe to say that the most popular form of identification is a driver license; however, not everyone drives. Is there another option?

Yes. A photo identification card.

What is a Photo ID Card?

Aside from the fact that it doesn't license you to operate a motor vehicle, a photo ID card is a legal, valid form of identification. The ID card will include your basic information (name, address, height, weight, age, etc.) and your picture. You can also display your choice to become an organ donor on your ID card.

How Do You Get a Photo ID Card?

Applying for a photo ID card is much like applying for your driver license for the first time (without the tests, of course).

Head to your local Circuit Court Clerk's office to start the process.

Those wishing to obtain an ID card must be at least age 15, bring proof of Kentucky residency, birth certificate, and Social Security card as well as the $12 fee.

At the time of application, you can also register to vote, and males between the ages of 18 and 26 can register for Selective Service.

Child Identification Card

Per the Kentucky Child ID Program, children under the age of 15 who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents can apply for a child photo identification card.

To obtain a photo ID for your child, simply go to your local Circuit Court Clerk's office with the child's birth certificate and Social Security card. A parent or legal guardian must sign for the ID. There is a $4 fee and the ID will be valid for four years.

The card will be much like a regular ID card, but will not show the child's signature or address. The omission of the address will protect the child in case the card is lost or stolen.

Non-U.S. Citizen Identification Card

Non-U.S. citizens applying for an ID card will need to show the same documents and identification as if they were applying for a driver license.

If you are a non U.S. citizen, apply for your ID card at your regional driver licensing field office; after applying, your ID card will be issued at your Circuit Court Clerk's office.

Renewing Your ID Card

Kentucky ID cards are valid for a period of four years after they are issued, and expire 31 days after the card holder's birthday. Renewals must be processed in person at your local Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Division of Driver Licensing office.

Renewal fees are $15 for all applicants over the age of 16. Kentucky Child ID cards (for children under the age of 15 years) must be renewed every four years. The fee for renewal of Child ID cards is $4.

Replacing Your ID Card

If you're already in Kentucky's database, just visit your local licensing office and ask for a duplicate ID card. You'll need to provide proof of identity with a birth certificate or Social Security card, and proof of Kentucky residency.

You can only replace a lost ID card in person, not online or by mail.
