Voting carries rights and responsibilities that should be exercised by all registered Kentucky voters.

In Kentucky, you can register to vote at your County Clerk's office or local driver licensing field office.

Eligibility Requirements

Before you head out to register, make sure you are eligible to vote in Kentucky. The eligibility requirements to vote in KY are as follows:

  • You must be a United States citizen and be a Kentucky resident for at least 28 days.
  • You must not vote outside of Kentucky.
  • You must not be deemed "mentally incompetent" by the court.
  • You must not have been convicted of a felony; if you have been, you must have your civil rights reinstated in order to vote.
  • You must be at least 18 in time for the next general election; however, you can vote in the May primary election as long as you will be 18 at the time of the Novemeber general election.

Registration Process

The voter registration process in Kentucky is simple. Go to your local driver licensing field office or County Clerk's office, ask for a voter registration form, fill it out, and hand it in. Since voting is a free process, you won't be charged any registration fees.

You might want to save some time by downloading, printing, and completing the voter registration form at home.

In Kentucky, you must register 28 days before the date of the election for which you intend to vote. The State Board of Elections Web site provides an updated calendar of election dates for your convenience.

Renewing Registration Information

  • Name Change

  • Your County Clerk's office must have your correct name. Update any name changes by renewing your driver's license, visiting the County Clerk's office or notifying them in writing, or by filling out a new voter registration card.

  • Address Change

  • If you move within the same county, you must notify the County Clerk's office in person or in writing, or update your driver's license. Your clerk will inform you of your new precinct. If you don't update your address before the day of election, you must still vote in your new precinct, and notify them of your address change when you vote.

If you move outside of the county, update your address with your new County Clerk's office or update your driver's license at least 29 days before the election. If you can't meet the time criteria, you'll need to vote in your previous county for the current election.

If you temporarily move outside of Kentucky (for example, in the military or overseas), you may vote using an absentee ballot.

  • Party Change

  • To change your party affiliation and still be eligible to vote in the upcoming primary election, you must fill out a new voter registration card and submit it to your County Clerk's office before December 31.

Voter Fraud

Although voters have many rights, as a registered voter you may not do the following:

  • Vote under a fake name
  • Vote more than once during a single election
  • Vote using another person's identity
  • Influence the decisions of other voters using rewards, bribes, threats, or any other kind of force

Doing, or attempting to do, any of these are against state and federal law.

If you feel you have been the victim of voter fraud, or that your rights as a voter have been violated, contact your precinct election officers, the County Clerk/County Board of Elections, the State Board of Elections, or the Attorney General's Election Fraud Hotline at 1-800-328-8683.
